COLORS OF APRIL

© 2000 Laura Golden

Just as the rain started
just as the light shifted
slipping as if into sleep
image on the retina
impulse to the cortex
imprints a memory so deep

I wish I had words to
capture the colors of
April in this place I've been
I wish I had words to
capture the texture of
April in this place I've seen

Mask on the table
tells me I've been here
shedding an old disguise
crack in the sidewalk
home to a wildflower
surrender the need for lies

What's in the past
is not necessarily over
but if it's over,
please let me leave it behind
Just 'cause it's past
is no guarantee that it's over
but when it's over,
I'm gonna leave it behind

Never such softness
never such promise
never such shades of green
in all the exertion
even the abundance
covers the loss in between

Eggs all in one basket
it's time to scatter
the pieces of shell to the wind
turn the sail over
carry me homeward
season says time to begin

Just as the rain started
just as the light shifted
slipping as if into steep
